I'm a sucker for a good (or bad) list The American Film Institute is airing the Top 100 Movie Quotes of All-Time this comming tuesday. I think they do one of these top 100s every summer, last summer was the top 100 movie characters of all-time (50 good guys, 50 bad guys). Fortunatly for me I love movies, and good movie quotes, so the fact that I'm being suckered into watching this doesn't bother me. 'Cause this is how the conversation goes between me and the tv: TV: Hey theres a show on about ballroom dancing Me: whatever TV: No wait, I didn't tell you the best part Me: ...... TV: They've ranked the 10 best ballroom dancers of all time Me: Fuckin right doggy! I'm in! As soon as a list is introduced I'm hooked, the topic doesn't matter. The Discovery Channel might be the best for these types of shows. They're usually interesting, and the #1 whatever it is usually makes me mad enough to rant about it for days....I love it. These shows are best watched with at least one other person, so you can get good debate going. As an example, there was a top 10 most dangerous jobs show on the discovery channel sometime when I was back in Guelph, so my roommate and I grab the prime real estate and get ready. #1 was crab fishman, cause they gotta do it in freezing water and a lot of folks die on the job apparently cause shit gets all icey. Fine whatever I guess thats a pretty dangerous job but tucked somewhere in the middle of the list was airplane test pilot...these are the guys that fly planes so that they can determine the maximum stress the planes can handle...they've gotta fly in situations, and preform maneuvers that should never happen to regular pilots, that was only like the #6 most dangerous job. Somewhere else in the middle was LAND MINE DETONATOR!! according to the list a job more dangerous then both of those was construction worker, because it has the highest accidental death rate of all professions (as opposed to the purposeful on the job deaths) fuck that shit, I'd take construction work over land mine detonation anyday! They're fucking land mines you idiots!! Wow that turned into a much longer rant then I expected.....although it does show my point about how hopelessly hooked on these 'list' shows I am. So sometime before tuesday night I'm gonna compile my top 10 movie quotes (probably tomorrow...maybe I'll do 20 if I'm feeling hardcore) Oh and if anyone from the Discovery Channel is reading this I think you should hire me as a consultant for some of your list shows.....I'll try to dial down the profanity if its a job requirement. "We're gonna need a bigger boat" <----that one was free....and it might crack the top 20
Comments:
what about graduate student? surely the suicide rate should count for something!
I'm addicted to all those shows on VH1, also a channel for lists. The always have "top 50 awesomely bad..." whatever. celebrity fights, hair, behavior...whatever. I don't even really like pop culture all that much...but...I...can't...stop...watching!!!!!
ahahahahhaha. undergrads who kill themselves are pussies.
kidding. the paradox known as lists. i love them but hate them. i hate lists that go 'best' or 'worst' whatever. they're so subjective. i'm laughing at the land mine detonator bit. one of my favourite movie quotes is from eternal sunshine of the spotless mind: "carrie, i am making a BIRDHOUSE!" it's only funny when you watch it.
i got you covered for eternal sunshine.
