Wow, did I actually learn stuff in school? I watched 'The Scholar' tonight, its a reality show placing 10 U.S. high school students against each other for a grand prize of a full scholarship to the school of their choice (4 others get $50,000 to put towards school). Tonight was the second show (I missed the first one) and I think the 10 kids there are supposed to be super smart (at least the ones they focused on were...i dunno if they slipped a couple dummies in there). At the end of the show 3 of the kids are chosen to go head-to-head to win a spot in the final 5 (the big money round), its kinda like the spelling bee format, where one kid gets asked a question, if they're right they stay, if they're wrong its back to the bench to hope for another shot. Then the next kid gets a different question and so on until someone wins (there can be only one!!!). ANYway the whole point to this post was that I thought the questions these kids got asked were kinda easy. The subject for this weeks challenge was biology: 1. How many chambers does the heart have? 2. The spinal cord and brain are parts of what system? 3. What is the longest bone in the human body? (get your minds outta the gutter!) 4. The intestine and stomach are parts of what system? 5. Veins carry blood to the heart, what do arteries do? 6. Ligaments join bone to bone, what connects muscle to bones?*** 7. If I were talking about your dermis and epidermis, to what would I be refering?*** And heres the question that won it all 8. What does RNA stand for? Ok granted I've had 4 years of university science that these kids haven't goten to yet...but don't these questions seem a little easy for 10 of the smartest high schoolers in America?? Check the answers in the comments section to see how well you did(the "***" indicate the two questions that were answered incorrectly)
Comments:
1. Four
2. Nervous System 3. Femur 4. Digestive System 5. Carry blood from the heart to the rest of the body 6. Tendons 7. Skin 8. Ribonucleic Acid didn't we learn the stuff pretty early on?? or am I making stuff up again?
yeah, i thought they were pretty easy. it seemed like grade 9 stuff, although i must admit i still hadn't thought of "tendons" till after he said the correct answer.
yea i watched that last week and was going to post about it!
last week's 'showdown' was literature, so naturally i killed it. i would've died this week. lol. it was a bit jeopardyish, i thought. i mean, all you need is a general knowledge of these categories, and you're set.
literature might've boned me a little...as much as I like to read I'm not so good at the literature trivia.

It just seemed like they could've asked questions that at least made the kids pause and think for a second....although I guess the pressure of the situation is probably enough to rattle you from answering 'easy' questions. << Home |
